How I Made Over $200,000 From Yard Sales

How I Made Over $200,000 From Yard Sales

When most people walk through a yard sale, they see old stuff.

I see opportunity.

Over the last several years I’ve built a reselling business that has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars, all while raising my three boys from home. Yard sales have been one of the biggest reasons that’s been possible.

The best part?

You don’t need a huge budget to get started.

Many of the best flips I’ve ever found cost less than $10.

Why Yard Sales Are Still One of the Best Places to Find Inventory

Even with online marketplaces everywhere, local yard sales remain one of the best sources for profitable inventory because:

  • Sellers usually want things gone quickly.
  • Prices are often negotiable.
  • Many valuable items are overlooked.
  • Competition is much lower than retail thrift stores.

If you’re willing to learn what to look for, it’s possible to find items worth many times what you pay.

What I Look For First

Rather than searching every table randomly, I develop a quick mental scan.

Some categories I always check include:

  • Vintage western items
  • Leather goods
  • Sterling silver jewelry
  • Quality cookware
  • Designer handbags
  • Vintage toys
  • Clothing, both name-brand and vintage
  • High-end shoes
  • Collectibles
  • Cameras and electronics

I don’t buy everything.

I buy items with proven resale demand.

My Biggest Advice for Beginners

One mistake I see new resellers make is trying to learn everything at once.

Instead:

Pick one category.

Learn it thoroughly.

Become the expert.

Over time you’ll naturally recognize profitable items in other categories.

The Secret Isn’t Finding Expensive Things

People often ask me,

“How do you find all the valuable stuff?”

The answer isn’t luck.

It’s pattern recognition.

After listing thousands of items, you begin noticing:

  • quality
  • craftsmanship
  • brands
  • materials
  • age
  • rarity

These clues become second nature.

Don’t Be Afraid to Leave Empty-Handed

This surprises people.

Sometimes the best yard sale is the one where I buy nothing.

Successful resellers don’t buy because something is cheap.

They buy because there’s demand.

Passing on mediocre inventory leaves more money for the next great find.

The Best Tools I Use

If you’re just starting, here are a few tools I recommend:

  • Thermal label printer
  • Digital shipping scale
  • Measuring tape
  • Good lighting
  • Smartphone with an eBay app
  • Inventory bins
  • AI listing tools
